My name is Sheila, like most women in middle age, after your kids a grown and don't need you as much you start to look for something to do for yourself, for years I tried to figure what it is I like to do for my self. My husband finally gave up trying to help me figure it out when one day he and my son went to a local match, came back all exited about shooting and I said "Wait a minute I want to go next time that sounds like fun!", well the rest is history I've been hooked on shooting since then. We've gone to the range and shot paper targets before, it was fun but really did nothing for me until I found the competition end of things., now I can't for the next match.
That was 4 years ago, now I run a women’s division at our local club, we do a intro to the shooting sports once a month, usually handguns seems to be the most interest of the ladies. We've done this for over 2 years and have over 200 new shooters introduced to the sport. I strongly believe as a parent and I tell all my Moms this "If you have a child in the house and guns in the house you have a obligation as a parent to know firearm safety", I really don't care if they come back to shoot again at least I've sent someone out into society with a positive attitude and safety knowledge about firearms.
I personally love the competition end of shooting, My whole family shoots and there is no better way to keep track of a teenager than by having them on the range with you, our family vacations now consist of traveling to shoots, we've been to Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, its amazing the new friends we've made around the US.
Last summer I was fortunate to be able to take shooting class at the "STI Handgunner" shoot in Colorado. The Babes with Bullets class was the best experience of my life, I had a chance to shoot with the top Lady shooters in the world. If the opportunity ever comes along to be able to take the class don't pass it up it was awesome!!! Not only did I get to shoot with them I had the opportunity to get to know them and make some wonderful friends, you lodge with them, eat with them and get to pick there brains of all the shooting knowledge they have, and they are willing to share it all. I can't wait till the next time I get to shoot with them which will be soon when I take the Advanced Babes with Bullets class.
Ladies when the guys tell you "Shooting is a Guys Sport" don't listen "Shooting is a Family Sport", it doesn't matter your age, sex, or athletic ability anyone can shoot (and women are usually better shooters than guys).
